Long before Derrick met the love of his life, Michael, he dreamed of his wedding day. Wish used the couple’s vision, warmth, and creative direction, in partnership with wedding planner Thomas Bui, to help Derrick and Michael host the ultimate San Francisco wedding.
Statement florals were the perfect choice for this once-in-a-lifetime event. Reflecting the grooms’ taste for classic luxury with a masculine edge, Wish developed a black and white floral palette with gilded, golden accents, inspired by the style of Tom Ford. We chose bold yet refined florals: rich and buttery playa blanca roses, elegant phalaenopsis orchids, and sleek and sexy black calla lilies. We also incorporated sustainable elements like bleached umbrella ferns and ruscus.
Derrick and Michael decided to marry at San Francisco City Hall, to acknowledge the city where they met and pay tribute to one of the most important landmarks in LBGTQ+ history. Wish designed a show-stopping eight-foot-wide circular structure, wrapped with sumptuous florals, to serve as a ceremony backdrop in the grand architectural space. (Fun fact: we installed this spectacular floral sculpture in less than one hour!)
The grooms hosted their reception in another icon of architectural grandeur, Fairmont San Francisco. Inside the legendary Gold Room, our floral design included clouds of roses, lilies, and orchids suspended over reflective glass tables. Each table featured statement crystal candlesticks, masculine black candles, and linear gold candlesticks provided by our friend Edgar (check out his Instagram @flowersbyedgar). Gilded leaves swayed gently between flickering candles whenever a light breeze whispered into the room. Combined with uber-luxe Theoni chairs and place settings, finished by polished Whimsique menus, the head table stole the show with a long and luscious floral runner accented with coordinating crystal candelabras.
The wedding weekend was a dream come true for the grooms and guests alike. From stunning views of San Francisco Bay to rides in classic trolley cars, performances by stilt walkers and the Lucky Devils Band, this event truly had it all. At one brilliant moment during the newlyweds’ first dance, shimmering fireworks lit up the room. In this grandest of San Francisco love affairs, sparks literally flew.
